Window Tinting Regulations for Automotives

It is vital that before you have any automotive window tinting applied to your vehicle that you check your local laws to see what is permitted and what is not. Automotive window tinting reduces the amount of visible light transmitted (VLT) through a car's windows. At night and during periods of poor visibility, this can create problems for the driver. In addition, it can also present a hazard for law enforcement that must be able to see through the windows of a vehicle to identify the passengers and or driver of that vehicle.

In many jurisdictions, there are government regulations, which govern darkness levels of films. In many cases, what may be legal in one state or jurisdiction may not be legal in another state. There have also be instances where the motorist driving a vehicle registered in one state was ticketed for driving in a different state than where their car is registered because the tinting on the windows was in violation of that states laws.

The United States, federal Department of Transportation (DOT) specifies a minimum of 70% visible light transmission (VLT) for window tinting on the windshield as well as the windows to the immediate left and right of the driver. The federal DOT does not have any specifications for the VLT for other windows. However, as stated earlier, many of the individual states have pass laws, which have placed more restrictions on tinting than what was set forth by the DOT. In addition, the DOT regulates commercial vehicles, not private vehicles. In Canada, automobile tinting laws are regulated at the province level.
