Should Window Film Be Used On Low E Windows?
Basically, there are two types of low E surfaces used on window glass. The first is a conductive coating, which is applied to the glass as it is being produced. This type provides some heat loss reduction, but does not significantly reduce heat gain. The second type of coating is a complex system of multiple layers of metals as well as conductive coatings, which are applied to the glass after it has been manufactured. This type of low E glass provides a greater amount of heat reductions as well as also significantly reduces heat loss. Therefore, window film would be more beneficial if applied to the first type of low E glass. If you do not know which type of low E windows you have, you will need to contact your window manufacturer and ask about the specifications on your windows. In addition to the type of low E window you have, the location of the low E surface is also very important in deciding if you should use window film. If the low E window system is double pane windows and the low E surface is facing the air space between the panes, then window film can be installed on the window without reducing or eliminating the heat loss reduction of the low E window.
