A Brief History of Window Films

 

In the 1960's, an employee at a greeting card company is said to have made several transparent plastic films for a 25-year anniversary card and when that employee held the film to the window to view it better, they noticed a significant amount of heat reduction. This discovery quickly led to the creation of the window film industry.

The purpose of the original film was to reduce heat gain. However, as the window film industry made developments and improvements on their product, the public voiced its desire for the development for colored sun control films, which would complement and enhance architectural design. The window film industry responded by producing window films with such colors as bronze, gray, gold, amber, etc.

During the 1970s energy crisis, the window film industry developed window film that also reduced the amount of heat loss to the outside of the home. Through many experimentations and countless failures, new window film materials as well as how they were created were developed, which improved the characteristics of window films, mostly in the area of heat retention within a room's interior.

In over four decades since the accidental discovery of window film, there have been many improvements. One such improvement is was safety and security film. This thicker film actually holds shattered windows together, preventing the countless sharp shards from causing more harm to individuals. It is unknown the many lives that have been spared simply because of this film. In addition, safety and security films have been used by countless retailers to detour would be robbers and thieves by reducing the effectiveness of smash and grab robberies. Since its introduction, window films have saved thousands if not millions of dollars in energy costs, and in reducing property loss and damage. Imagine the many more benefits window films hold for us in the future.
