Can Window Films Cause Glass To Break?
The answer to this is YES. Glass window will break when they are placed under stressed. This can be from thermal stress caused from absorption of solar radiation, tensile stress, which is brought on by the sheer weight of the glass itself, mechanical stress from strong wind force, impact stress, from being struck by an objects, or even stress brought on from the settling of the building, which is known as twisting stress. Thermal stress, however, is the only form of stress that can be caused by the film. Usually however, the window films are not the actual cause of the thermal stress, but they will increase the thermal stress on sunlit glass. In addition, the age of the glass as well as the type of glass will also have a direct affect of its ability to withstand different degrees of thermal stress. Because of this, the window film industry has recommended film-to-glass tables for use by factory-trained dealer installers to ensure that the film does not contribute to the breaking of a window. Listed below are a few of the glass types and conditions where tinted window film should not be used: Single pane glass greater than 100 sq.ft.
Double pane glass greater than 40 sq.ft.
Triple pane glass
Tinted glass thicker than
Clear glass thicker than 3/8
